I know it can be difficult sometimes to reach out, but if you’re reading this, you may be looking for a therapist to help you (or someone you care about) with grief, anxiety, trauma, depression, relationship/work difficulties, or life transitions. Or maybe you just need to talk confidentially to an objective party, to someone with a different perspective.

Alice Andrews, M.A.

Based in Kerhonkson, NY, my practice integrates many therapies, modalities, and approaches. The central ones are Coherence Therapy (based on neuroscience), Focusing-oriented Therapy (somatic), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy (experiential). At its foundation is Evolutionary Psychiatry, which offers an adaptive lens. You can read about these, along with the other therapies and modalities I utilize, here.

I regularly incorporate mindfulness-based techniques (and breathing exercises), and when appropriate make use of music & sound therapy, ecotherapy, and Brainspotting. I draw inspiration from additional therapies such as Hakomi, Somatic Therapy, and Expressive Arts Therapy — in addition to my background in philosophy.

Why I call my practice Integrative Adaptive Therapy

At bottom we are an adapting species. Most of us are born into a complex social niche that is situated in (and constrained) by time and culture: our technologies, sociopolitical-economic realities, the philosophical, ideological, and aesthetic zeitgeists. Given our individual nature and nurture, we do our best to fit the specific niches we find ourselves in.

Often these niches are good-enough fits for us, but sometimes we need a little tweaking—developing skills, gaining new perspectives and tools—to successfully adapt and thrive. I can help with this. Other times, more is needed; sometimes beliefs or strategies that were once adaptive persist long after their usefulness, causing unnecessary suffering and unhappiness. Here we can work together to help you adapt and integrate new learnings, stories, and adaptive strategies.

Sometimes, though, these niches (social, professional) are not good fits for us no matter how much we try to adapt. Part of our work together involves you coming to understand yourself in a new or deeper way—trusting that there are different adaptive responses that are available to you, including changing your niche. See niche-change theory.

And finally, I also call it Integrative Adaptive Therapy because it integrates many therapies, orientations, and modalities.

Adaptive Healing

Navigating our personal ecosystems is challenging enough, but doing so in a world that is out of balance and in crisis can be destabilizing. Utilizing various modalities, we’ll reconnect you with your inner-compass, your body’s wisdom, and your innate capacity for healing. From this grounded, centered place, you’ll become resourced and resilient, with newfound agency, purpose, and vitality.

I have experience with people who are neurodivergent (including highly sensitive people), as well as those who are relationship diverse.
